How did your previous life prepare you for Virtual Peaker?

I’ve always wanted my work to contribute to a better and brighter future, allowing me to make a positive impact on the world. Combine that with my love and passion for problem-solving and technology, you’ve got a perfect match! Finishing my undergraduate degree in Computer Science Engineering at J.B. Speed School at the University of Louisville this past May has given me the tools, knowledge, and opportunities to do what I love, software development. I’m currently continuing my education to get my master’s degree so that I can expand my knowledge and grow as a software engineer.

Tell us about your role at Virtual Peaker.

Zane Peckenpaugh recycling 2I work as a Software Engineer Intern here at Virtual Peaker. I help out on both the front and back end, whether that involves helping fix bugs or adding additional functionality to our backend or our front-end applications. While I’ve only been here for a short time, I’ve learned so much in terms of software development, familiarity with the code base, and development practices. It’s always exciting to put your skills to the test and learn new things to keep up in an ever-evolving field. Everyone that I’ve met, worked with, and talked to has been extremely passionate about what they do and about the company while also being friendly and personable. The culture here at Virtual Peaker is outstanding and I can’t wait to keep meeting the team.

How do you personally engage in sustainability efforts?

As a college student, one of the biggest ways I contribute to sustainability efforts is by cutting down on carbon emissions. Having always lived on or around campus, I can easily walk to classes and campus every day instead of driving. Also living in downtown Louisville, I can walk or bike to most places, whether that is to grab a meal, go to the park, or meet up with friends. My house also participates in a recycling effort. We consciously make an effort to recycle any recyclables we have, while also cutting down on using plastic water bottles and plastic baggies to cut down on plastic waste.

What can you tell us about yourself?

Zane Peckenpaugh recycling 1I am ahuge outdoors person. During COVID-19, my family and I got really into hiking, hiking locally, and getting out to see some cool scenery such as natural bridges and waterfalls. Traveling is also something I love and aim to do more of. I was fortunate enough to get to experience some cool places like Costa Rica, Punta Cana, and Hawaii. I got to experience the culture and beautiful areas by hiking volcanoes and huge waterfalls, walking through luscious rainforests, white water rafting, and beautiful beaches. Being active has always been a huge part of my life, with working out being one of the biggest. Working out has always been a way to keep myself both physically and mentally healthy, as it is a huge stress reliever as well as a passion and a hobby. One thing I could never go without is food. I’m a HUGE foodie. One of the biggest allures to traveling is getting to try different foods and dishes, and if there is one thing I will splurge on, it’s some good food!
