Public Policy Intern

Virtual Peaker is looking for a Public Policy Intern who will help solve the climate crisis through monitoring and influencing constructive laws and utility regulations. As the environment shifts, so does our need to shift energy usage to optimal times. Virtual Peaker needs to shape the direction and implementation of policies and rules related to demand response and demand flexibility.

The Public Policy Intern will be a key resource on government and commission initiatives related to demand response in the United States and Canada. Your primary focus will be to monitor policymaking and regulatory proceedings, review utility filings and energy agency reports, contribute to working groups and task forces, and advocate for grid-responsive technology behind-the-meter, such as batteries, electric vehicle charging, smart HVAC, water heating, and other emerging technologies. You will report to the Director of Policy and Solutions Partnerships at Virtual Peaker. The successful candidate will navigate ambiguity, plug into a high-performing team, and thrive in a fast-paced environment

Key Responsibilities

  • Research and track legislation, regulation, and market developments in the United States and Canada
  • Summarize and synthesize policy and regulation that impacts the market for demand response
  • Contribute to policy and market development strategies
  • Advocate for policy that supports Virtual Peaker’s business
  • Identify business opportunities to add to Virtual Peaker’s sales pipeline
  • Internship will run for 16 weeks

Education & Experience

  • Understanding of utilities, energy, and/or climate policy
  • Interest in clean energy and grid modernization issues, including demand response
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills; proficiency in note taking
  • Detail-oriented, resourceful and diligent
  • Bachelor’s degree required or in process; public policy, economics, business, or sustainability degree preferred
  • Ability to travel as needed, up to 10%
